Its ok to wear a scarf with a tank top right? |
I found this fabric at fatquartershop.com awhile back and knew it would make a great scarf. I like that the color pallet is neutral and the print is large enough that from far away you would never know it was so geeky (kinda like me!).
I found this great tutorial online over at the Kill Them With Craftiness blog. I am a self taught very amateur sewer that uses my mom's old ornery 30 pound Singer sewing machine and was able to figure it out just fine (but I should probably mention I pick things up quickly, so if you have coveted fabric you might want to do a trial run). I will note that the pattern calls for 2 yards of fabric in order to have the length required for the double loop scarf. Since the fabric is not cheap and you have to take into account S&H, I winged it with one yard, but I did have to change the dimensions a bit and tack on some length to my fabric strips, which resulted in some interesting face mashups (Spidy Hulk Smash!). Luckily this huge print and the gathered nature of the scarf is very forgiving!

If you like this scarf and sewing is absolutely not your thing, the Rebel Downtown Etsy shop has a great selection of comic fabric infinity scarfs for sale. And for $25 a piece they are a total deal, since that is about the price you would pay just for two yards of this fabric alone. I havent seen her use this particular fabric for the scarves, but I wouldnt be surprised if she was open to requests! I really want a wonder woman scarf to add to my collection, but it seems as though every female super hero fabric is geared for 2 year olds. One of the things on my to do list is to start screen printing my own fabric, since its so hard to find fun prints that arent childish. Hopefully this is something I will be able to share in the near future!
Question of the week: Whats your favorite item of geeky clothing? My readership is probably at one at the moment (me!) but I like being consistant, so maybe one day people will be willing to share with me. This is for you future readers!
Forget RebelDowntown, do you take special order requests? If only you could find some 'Angel' or 'Buffy' fabric...Angel/Spike Mashup!!? for my very own infinity scarf?! And lucky for me, its colder up here in the bay :)
